| The primary responsibility of the Soil and Water Conservation program of the VI Department of Agriculture is the rehabilitation of farm ponds. The engineer, Mr. John Henderson, works with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to identify ponds built under the Soil Conservation Service (precursor to NRCS) that are in need of rehabilitation. Farm ponds serve to control water flow to prevent flooding and to prevent soil erosion from farmer’s fields. Mr. Henderson also provides technical assistance to individuals and community groups interested in rehabilitating ponds and building rain gardens. Rain gardens are built to slow down runoff from impermeable surfaces such as parking lots to give water time to soak into the ground and replenish the underground water table rather than run off. | |
